A Two-Part Intellectual Property Workshop for Artists, Arts Organizations and Small Businesses ccc Admission is free and all are welcome!
ccc The Bronx Council on the Arts and the Legal Aid Society present a two-part Intellectual Property Workshop for artists, arts organizations and small businesses to be held at Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, at 6:30pm, Thursday, October 30th and Thursday, December 4th in the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, located on the campus of Hostos Community College at 450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. ccc These workshops will feature attorneys from Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper and Scinto and the Community Development Project of the Legal Aid Society. ccc
Doors will open at 6:00pm Workshop will begin promptly at 6:30pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
For artists and arts organizations, creating or commissioning a work of fine or practical art is just the beginning. To protect the ownership of the finished work, it is essential to learn about trademarks, copyrights, design patents, and work-for-hire agreements. An expert panel of intellectual property attorneys will explain these concepts using examples that will be familiar to artists and arts organizations. The concepts learned in this workshop will also be useful to nonprofits and small businesses that are not arts-related. ccc

Bronx Council on the Arts Unveils “Seeing It Through” A Free Professional Development Workshops in November
Bronx Council on the Arts launches its “Seeing It Through” professional development series on November 6th, 2014 at BCA’s future headquarters in Westchester Square. The series’ inaugural workshop will feature with a special appearance by bookseller Aurora Anaya-Cerda of La Caza Azul Bookstore – New York City’s leading Latino book source. She will discuss how she created her business via public fundraising campaigns, and will conclude with a brief Q&A.
The workshop will be held at BCA @ 2700 East Tremont Avenue (corner of St. Raymond Avenue), Bronx, NY 10461, from 6:30-8:30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.
“We created this program to improve our yearly BRIO awards submissions, but also to give Bronx artists and organization leaders the tools that could help them generate extra income,” says Bronx Writers Center Director Charlie Vázquez.
Other presenters, such as Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa and Dramatic Question Theater, will address aspiring novelists and playwrights. Poets and Writers Magazine’s Reading and Workshops Director Bonnie Marcus will discuss how to get funded for literary presentations. Some of the workshops will be held at the Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College and all are free.

2015 BRIO Award Applications Available Online Week of November 3rd ccc
This year’s online application submission deadline is Friday, January 30, 2015, 11:59 pm.
BCA’s 2015 BRIO Fellowship Program celebrates 26 years of supporting individual artists in the creation of work in literary, media, performing and visual arts. Bronx artists may apply in one of the following categories: Acting, Choreography, Crafts, Dance, Digital Arts, Fiction, Film Animation, Illustrated Text, Illustration/Artist Book, Installation Art, Instrumental and Vocal Music Performance, Mixed Media, Music Composition, Narrative/Documentary/Experimental Film/Video, Non-Fiction, Painting, Performance Art, Performance Poetry, Photography, Playwriting, Poetry, Printmaking/Drawing, Screenwriting, Sculpture, Spoken Word, and Storytelling.
A total of 25 awards of $3,000 each are available to Bronx artists. Eligible applicants must be 18 years or older, live in the Bronx, and may NOT be enrolled as a full-time graduate or undergraduate student. Individuals who work for BCA or who are recipients of any of the Council’s awards in 2014-15 including BRIO, Arts Fund, or Community Arts Grant, are also ineligible.

The selection of awards are based solely on artistic excellence and decided by a panel of arts professionals of various disciplines. All materials involved in the selection process are reviewed anonymously. All applicants are notified of panel decisions by e-mail approximately four months after the deadline date. Winners are invited to an awards ceremony in June 2015 to receive the first payment of $2,500. The remaining balance of $500 is to be paid to the artist upon completion of a community service activity which is required of all awardees.
Funding for BRIO is provided by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs-Greater New York Arts Development Fund. Additional fundingis provided by the NYS Council on the Arts, Lambent Foundation Fund of Tides Foundation,Auchincloss Foundation, Inc.and BCA’s membership program. ccc
