Condoleezza Rice Says America Will Never Be Race Blind

Condoleezza Rice Says America Will Never Be Race Blind

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on a Thanksgiving edition of Face the Nation that America may have come a long way in confronting racial inequality, but will never be “race blind.”

“We have a Black president. We’ve had two Black secretaries of state. We have Black CEOs. Obviously African-Americans are pushing way into territories that, probably, my grandparents would never have thought possible,” Rice said on CBS’s Face the Nation, but added that race will always be a factor in American life.

It is a birth defect with which this country was born out of slavery; we’re never really going to be race blind,” she said.
She pointed to the confluence of race and poverty as a particularly troubling constraint for overcoming inequality, and wondered if that problem isn’t becoming even more exacerbated in recent years.

1 Student Arrested Every Day In NYC Schools, 94% Are Black Or Latino According to new data released by the NYPD [pdf], an average of one student is arrested every day in the city's school system, and three others are issued summonses. During summer school from July through September, four students each day are arrested, and 94% of those arrested are black or Latino, and 83% are male. "The data raise concerns about black students being disproportionately arrested in the city's schools," Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the NYCLU says in a release. "If the Bloomberg administration is truly serious about closing the achievement gap, then they must address this disparity and focus more attention on educating children—not arresting them.” [ more › ]

MIDTOWN — Listen up, tweens: Pop sensation Justin Bieber will not be performing live at the Rockefeller Tree lighting ceremony Wednesday night.

Numerous media outlets, including DNAinfo, the New York Post and the Daily News had reported that Bieber would perform at the annual ceremony, which is set to kick off just two hours after President Barack Obama is set to arrive in the city for a series of fundraising events.

But event organizers clarified Monday that the Canadian heartthrob will not in fact be appearing live on stage Wednesday, and has instead pre-recorded a segment that will air during the show.

“It’s taped,” a spokeswoman said.

Cyclists To Hold "Rally For Traffic Justice" Wednesday Morning

Cyclists To Hold "Rally For Traffic Justice" Wednesday Morning Cyclists; advocates for safer streets; and the parents, family, and friends of deceased cyclists will gather outside NYPD Headquarters at 1 Police Plaza Wednesday morning to demand justice. Brooklyn artist Mathieu Lefevre became the most recent fatality after he was killed by a flatbed truck in Williamsburg last month—although the driver left the scene, the NYPD opted not to press any charges. Lefevre's parents, who are from Canada, learned about this not from the NYPD—which they say blew them off—but from the press, which seems to have an easier time getting answers than a grieving family.
