Placido portraits the dramatic story of Gabriel "Placido" de la Concepcio Valdes, an Afro-Cuban poet accused of leading a conspiracy against the Spanish colonial government. Preoccupied by the development of Afro-Cuban artists and craftsmen of the mid XIX century, Placido was executed after living a short and controversial life. (Dir. Sergio Giral, 96 min, 1986, Cuba, Drama, Spanish with English subt.)

June 25, 2016 @ 7PM
REVOLUTIONARY MEDICINE

The inspiring documentary tells the story of how a hospital's alternative health model is not only transforming communities on Honduras' Northern Coast, but also standing as an alternative to an increasingly privatized national health system. Could a remote hospital that runs on solar panels—in a community with no paved roads or electricity—provide a new global model for health care?  (Dirs. Jesse Freeston & Beth Geglia, 2013, 41 min, Honduras/Canada/United States, Documentary in Spanish with English subt.)

THEY ARE WE
Can a family separated by the transatlantic slave trade for 170 years sing and dance its way back together? They Are We reveals how a community of Afro-Cubans in the remote Cuban village of Perico becomes acquainted with their ancestors in Sierra Leone and vice-versa. They Are We documents the story of survival, cultural endurance, and the testament of resolve and shared humanity prevailing over the most brutal of institutions. (Dir. Emma Christopher, 2013, Cuba, Documentary, 77 min, Spanish, Mende, Banta, English subt.)
