NYC Still Marijuana Arrest Capital Of The World: Arrests Rose Again Last Year

NYC Still Marijuana Arrest Capital Of The World: Arrests Rose Again Last Year The NYPD made more than 50,680 arrests for low-level marijuana offenses in 2011, once again making low-level pot possession the number one cause of arrest in NYC. 2011 was the second-highest period for marijuana arrests in New York City history, and this despite NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly specifically ordering officers to stop arresting people who bring small quantities of marijuana into open view during a stop-and-frisk. In a September memo, Kelly told officers, "A crime will not be charged to an individual who is requested or compelled to engage in the behavior that results in the public display of marijuana." Unfortunately, most hippies were too stoned to read all the way the bottom of the memo, where Kelly included a photo of himself winking slyly. [ more › ]

Ammonia-Treated Meat Still Good Enough For America's Schools

Ammonia-Treated Meat Still Good Enough For America's Schools McDonald's, Burger King, and Taco Bell all agreed last week to promise to stop using ammonia-treated meat after some prodding a public shaming by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The so-called "pink slime," which is caused by the use of the ingredient Ammonium Hydroxide, is no longer good enough for our fast food restaurants—but it IS still good enough for our schools. Feb 19, 2012: Get an Insider’s Glimpse into Manhattan’s Historic Jazz Scene at The Apollo Theater

Feb 19, 2012: Get an Insider’s Glimpse into Manhattan’s Historic Jazz Scene at The Apollo Theater

- Visit two drastically different jazz clubs on Manhattan’s West Side (cover charge included)
- Host Shirley Zafirau has been immersed in NYC’s jazz scene for the past 50 years
- Hear fascinating accounts of how jazz arrived and evolved in New York
Meet Shirley Zafirau, a woman who has been pursuing jazz into the early hours of the morning since the early 1960s. She’s witnessed the evolution of jazz in New York — from pop-up jam sessions at Harlem lofts and Miles Davis’ Upper West Side brownstone garden (they were neighbors for 20 years) to the gigs at clubs and concert halls throughout the city that are popular today.
Here’s your chance to experience jazz the way Shirley does. She’ll meet you outside the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem; telling her stories of the neighborhood’s history while you walk along the “Boulevard of Dreams” to an under-the-radar jazz club that boasts a Hammond B3 organ, some of the best soul food in the city and a lively bar. Shirley will then take you on the “A” train from jazz’s “brownstone basement” roots to its modern, polished presentation at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on the 5th Floor of the Time Warner Center.
See how far the jazz scene has evolved as you listen to famous jazz veterans and popular newcomers perform with spectacular view of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. With a soulful menu that combines down-home inspired dishes with New York sophistication, Dizzy’s is a favorite hang for musicians. You never know who you might see ordering a drink at the bar.
The end time is approximate, as jazz sets don’t always start on time. There is some walking at the start of the SideTour, so dress appropriately for the weather. Don’t forget your metrocard. Dizzy’s has a $10 food/drink minimum (we recommend their mac & cheese).

Obama To Allow Homeowners To Refinance Mortgages

Obama To Allow Homeowners To Refinance Mortgages

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is trying to fix a stubborn drag on the economy by allowing all homeowners to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates even if they owe more than their homes are worth, tackling a difficult issue of vital concern in states key to President Barack Obama’s re-election.

SEE ALSO: Is Obama’s Path To Victory Through Tax Cuts?

Obama on Wednesday was to draw attention to a proposal he outlined in his State of the Union address to allow homeowners with privately held mortgages to take advantage of record low rates, for an annual savings of about $3,000 for the average borrower. Obama was detailing his plan during a visit to a northern Virginia community center.

The administration proposal faces a major hurdle in Congress. The program would cost between $5 billion and $10 billion, depending on participation, and would be paid for by a fee on large banks. The administration has tried unsuccessfully before to win support for such a tax on large banks.

The plan would expand the administration’s Home Affordable Refinance Program, which allows borrowers with loans backed by government-affiliated mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to refinance at lower rates. About 1 million homeowners have used it, well short of the 4 million to 5 million the Obama administration had expected. Moreover, many “underwater” borrowers – those who owe more than their homes are worth – couldn’t qualify.

The new administration plan would permit homeowners to refinance their mortgages into loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration. To qualify, borrowers with privately held mortgages would have to have no more than one delinquency in the six months preceding refinancing. Their loans would have to fall within the mortgage limits set by the FHA in their home counties.

Under the program, banks would have to reduce mortgage balances for homeowners who owe more than 140 percent of the value of their homes.

The administration estimates that 3.5 million borrowers would have incentive to refinance under the plan.

The features of the new proposal were confirmed Wednesday by a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the program ahead of Obama’s remarks. The Wall Street Journal first reported the details Wednesday.

The Obama administration also plans to announce new industry standards for mortgage servicers, a sort of “bill of rights” for borrowers that would protect them in their transactions.

Obama also is expected to announce a program that would allow the sale of foreclosed homes by Fannie Mae to investors who would then offer the properties for rental. Administration officials say there is a high demand for rental housing and such a program would also sustain neighborhoods by keeping foreclosed homes from falling into disrepair.

A punctured housing bubble was at the center of the recession, prompting widespread foreclosures and leaving millions of homeowners with houses valued at less than their mortgages. Hit hardest were Nevada and Florida, two states that figure prominently in the presidential campaign and that Obama is counting on winning to secure re-election.

Under the refinancing plan, any homeowner current on his or her mortgage could take advantage of historically low lending rates. The average rate for a 30-year mortgage is 3.88 percent.

About 11 million Americans – roughly 1 in 4 with a mortgage – are underwater, according to CoreLogic, a real estate data firm.

Half of all U.S. mortgages – about 30 million home loans – are owned by nongovernment lenders.

We’re sure he wishes he was light years away right now.

Wilton Police in Connecticut says the “Star Trek” actor Avery Brooks was drunk as hell behind the wheel Monday night.

Police responded after receiving a complaint of a person driving erratically on the road.

Brooks was taken into custody but was released after being booked. He’s due to appear in court on February 9th.

Avery Brooks is best known for his role on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” He also starred on the series “Spencer: For Hire.”

Welp! Atleast he wasn’t flying the spaceship.

HARLEM-BASED PHOTOGRAPHER TO HIGHLIGHT THE BEAUTY IN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN WITH NEW "BEAUTY IN BLACK" PROJECT

One of many photos to be featured in the project

New York, NY (BlackNews.com) -- Professional photographer Paul Phillips plans to provide artistic proof of the beauty in African American women with his "Beauty in Black" project recently launched on Kickstarter.com. The idea was inspired by a disturbing blog post in 2010 written by evolutionary psychologist, Satoshi Kanazawa who argued that black women are less physically attractive than other women. The post created a firestorm of angry comments across the web and was quickly removed from the website.

The "Beauty in Black" project will be a coffee table book filled with 30 to 40 high quality black & white and color photographs celebrating the beauty and spirit of black women. Phillips explains, "As a black man who is married to a beautiful black woman, I didn't get mad I got busy. I am creating a photo essay that will portray the beauty of African American women of all shades, shapes and sizes." The call for "models" will go out by word of mouth, over the internet, and in the media. The themes will deal with the hair, skin tone and body images of black women and girls from all walks of life from the celebrity to the everyday.

Kickstarter.com is the world's largest online funding platform for creative projects. Phillips explains why he created the project on kickstarter.com, "As a professional photographer, I own all of the equipment to create the book. I plan to photograph women from all over the country. In addition to raising funds for travel and printing, I plan to hire makeup artists and wardrobe stylists to work with my models." He plans to finish the book this year and publish by March 2013.

To learn more about "Beauty in Black", watch the video, and/or make a donation, visit his KickStarter page at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1657641638/beauty-in-black. Each project is required to offer rewards for donations and must reach the stated funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands. Donations start as low as $5 and rewards includes items such as a screen saver, a set of note cards, and a desk calendar featuring images from the collection.

Although Kanazawa's post was removed from the website, screen shots of excerpts appeared in the Huffington Post "Style" section: "What accounts for the markedly lower average level of physical attractiveness among black women? Black women are on average much heavier than nonblack women. [...] However, this is not the reason black women are less physically attractive than nonblack women."
