WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Dozens of Washington Heights community members and leaders came out Thursday evening for the unveiling of a mural depicting how violence has impacted their community.
Artists Frank Parga, 39, and Crystal Clarity, 28, worked with over a dozen high school students to design and paint the mural, called "Weaving Change Beyond the Shadows," on Amsterdam Avenue and 159th Street.
The 70 foot wide, 14 foot high work — which runs along the Amsterdam Avenue and 159th Street side of the Community League of the Heights headquarters — shows people impacted by violence being connected by a multi-colored quilt.
"They really just helped kick-start a lot of the process," said Parga about the student involvement. "That made people really feel something about it."
Adam Palermo, 18, said an image in the mural of a woman holding part of the quilt and weeping was inspired by Lisa Baez, whose daughter Cheyenne Baez was shot and killed in Harlem last October.

HARLEM—A licensed Department of Motor Vehicles inspector from an East Harlem garage was one of four people charged with allegedly issuing more than 7,000 safety inspection certificates without testing the vehicles, State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Thursday.
Cirilo Ventura, 45, an employee at 1995 First Avenue Station Inc., located at 1851 Park Ave. at East 127th Street, was one of those charged with various felonies including criminal possession of a forged Instrument, issuing a false certificate and illegal issuance of an emission certificate of inspection.
The other three people charged worked at stations in the Bronx. The four stations involved are among the city's busiest, according to the attorney general's office. The charges carry jail time ranging from 1 to 7 years in prison and fines of $15,000 per count.
“These individuals were trusted to perform state-required inspections that keep unsafe cars off the road, but instead they took advantage of their expertise to cheat the system,” Schneiderman said in a statement.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — With crime on a continued rise in the 34th Precinct, community leaders plan to meet with residents to discuss safety and introduce the precinct's new commanding officer.
Just last week, Inwood residents met with Deputy Inspector Barry Buzzetti, who replaced commanding officer Jose Navarro after he was demoted due to rising crime north of West 179th Street in Washington Heights and Inwood.
The more than 200 residents who attended the Aug. 24 meeting live in the Park Terrace section of Inwood, where a woman was allegedly raped by an off-duty cop days before the meeting.
During that meeting, Inwood residents called for their own precinct to be set up, citing rising crime in the area and limited resources to be dispatched in Inwood, which at its northernmost tip is 30 blocks from the station house.
Thursday’s meeting will give residents from the southern portion of the 34th Precinct a chance to voice concerns as well.

At the recent MTV Video Music Awards, the world witnessed a new fashion trend that has many Hip-Hop heads scratching their heads — Jeggings.
Otherwise known as the lovechild of jeans and leggings, Jeggings are a hybrid of denim and spandex loved by teenage girls, stick-thin fashionistas, and somewhat surprisingly, Lil’ Wayne.
After his performance at the award show, writers and tweeters alike took to the web to make fun of the leopard pair of skin-tight Jeggings that Wayne was wearing. One enterprising person even created a fake Twitter account for the pants,@Waynes_Jeggings.
The irony of Lil’ Wayne is that he will wear a pair of jeggings but still attempt insult a foe by calling him a fa**ot in one of his lyrics. But then his own fans will question his sexuality for his fashion choices. Lil’ Wayne knowingly wears clothing that will bring about that attention, aware of the fact that in hip-hop, defending your masculinity is crucial to credibility. However it’s a risk he’s willing to take, perhaps a privilege of having a well-earned reputation of being a thug.
