SEVEN BREATHS presents Jen Shyu's sonic, visual and visceral rites, and reflections upon her pilgrimage throughout Taiwan (her father's homeland), East Timor (her mother's homeland), Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea.

Using multiple tools of expression in multiple languages (new improvised languages, as well as Indonesian, Javanese, Taiwanese, indigenous Taiwanese languages, Tetum, Korean), this solo performance - that of a woman living simultaneously in multiple cultures and "projecting her ancestry" through contemporary monologue - will reveal a personal journey of loss and redemption made universal, giving voice to the silenced.

Jen Shyu is an experimental jazz vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, scholar, and educator who has performed as a solo artist, bandleader and collaborator. Her credits include singing with saxophonist Steve Coleman and Five Elements since 2003, presenting her own music in the US and abroad, and performing with Anthony Braxton in his operas Trillium E and Trillium J.

Known for her specialization in lesser-known and disappearing traditional musical forms in Taiwan, Korea, China and East Timor, Shyu was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship from 2011-13 and traveled in Indonesia to study Sindhenan, traditional Javanese improvisational singing. She is also a three-time winner of BCA's prestigious BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) award. Her latest project is her groundbreaking solo opera calledSOLO RITES: SEVEN BREATHS.It was commissioned by the Jerome Foundation with its world premiere on Wednesday, May 28th at Roulette Intermedium, Inc. in Brooklyn.
