Dear Mr. Thompson,

Tomorrow is the last day we celebrate Black History Month. It felt short, didn't it? Didn't it feel insufficient?

Please, donate to the Schomburg Center in the next 48 hours. Your much-needed gift will help protect and preserve black history each and every month of the year.

We always appreciate your generosity, perhaps more than we can say. I'm reaching out today because we still need $2,017 to meet our goal of $20,000 and proclaim that no, we are not done talking about black history just because February is coming to a close.

No, one month isn't enough for black history in all its richness and complexity.

No, a few great black women and men are not the definition of our collective culture.

No, the black experience doesn't belong shunted off in a corner of a history museum, or in a little paragraph at the end of a textbook chapter.

At the Schomburg Center, and with the support of our Schomburg Society members, we reject the notion that we can stop celebrating black triumphs, that race somehow doesn't matter today, or that we don't have further to go. As one of our generous donors, you must feel the same. Please consider giving again today and deepening your impact.

A gift today will help us say yes to black scholarship, particularly among young thinkers just starting out, and yes to the tens of thousands of visitors who come through our doors each month, knowing there's more to black history than they learned in school. It will help fund programs and events that help us build a nation celebrating black history and culture.

That work is important, it matters, and it depends on you.

Make a much-needed gift to the Schomburg Center. You can help extend Black History Month beyond tomorrow — all it takes is a gift right now.

Thank you so much for your past generosity, and your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Khalil Gibran Muhammad, PhD
