Immigration: Children can derive citizenship through a citizen parent
IF you have a U.S. citizen parent, you may already be a citizen. The rules for when a person gets U.S. citizenship through a parent are complicated. A child who “derives” citizenship through a parent gets U.S. gets citizenship automatically and need not file an application to preserve his or her citizen status.
