Photographer Brings Dominican Cave Art to Streets of Northern Manhattan

UPPER MANHATTAN — Daniel DuVall used to sell his photos outside of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side when visiting New York, but sitting alongside rows of other vendors and artists soon grew stale.

But in Northern Manhattan, vendors selling unique paintings and photography are rare, which is why DuVall’s presence in Inwood and Washington Heights has immediately stirred up interest.

DuVall’s work features images of cave drawings found in the depths of caves in the Dominican Republic, where he moved about a decade ago after vacationing at his sister’s home.

“It gets kind of boring in one spot,” he said of vending on Museum Mile. “So I thought, ‘why not try Washington Heights, there are Dominicans there, maybe they would be interested.'"

Indeed, people originally from the Dominican Republic and uptowners intrigued by the idea of owning a slice of pre-Columbian history (before Christopher Columbus came to the island), trickled by his stand outside Fort Tryon Park on Dyckman Street and Broadway over the weekend.

Charlie Rangel Crashed Rick Perry's Lunch Party

With the good citizens of New York City distracted by the other politician in town today, it seems that Rick Perry thought he could just slip into Inwood's Papasito Mexican Grill largely unnoticed. Not on Charlie Rangel's watch! The 15th district's Democratic representative took it upon himself to pay a visit to the restaurant — the site of "what was supposed to be a quiet fundraiser" with local Hispanic businessmen — to make sure the Texas governor knew whose turf he was on:
Rangel stayed for several minutes, telling reporters on his way out that he had shown up to make Perry “feel more comfortable."

"I would not want to embarrass him here," Rangel said, adding his opinion of Perry: "He’s tall and he’s from Texas."

Rangel left the event before Perry addressed the crowd, leaving organizer Fernando Mateo to issue a terse response to the drop-in: “He’s a statesman in New York, and we were always taught by our parents to respect the elder.” That Rick Perry really brings out the cowboy in everyone.

Northern Manhattan Safer than Greenwich Village, Says New Crime Report

MANHATTAN — Washington Heights and Inwood are far safer places to live in Manhattan than Greenwich Village and the Meatpacking District, according to a new report by DNAinfo.com that examines crime and safety in the city’s neighborhoods.

The "Crime & Safety Report," which ranks every neighborhood in New York for per capita crime, found that high property crime rates are dragging down Greenwich Village, which came in 68th out of 69 neighborhoods for overall safety. Dramatic drops in crime across the board in Washington Heights and Inwood gave those neighborhoods a boost.

After Uptown Attacks, Women Vow to Fight Back

INWOOD — The alleged rape of a woman by an off-duty cop has left the people of northern Manhattan shaken.

But it's also left lnwood residents determind to learn how to fight back.

Just two weeks after the attack, more than 50 local women packed a free self-defense class less than a block away from where the rape allegedly happened.

“I’m fed up, and I’m not going to let this frighten me anymore,” said one woman attending the class who asked to remain anonymous. “This is my neighborhood, my home, nobody is going to take that away from me.”

DNAinfo was invited to attend the session, but was asked to not show any of the participant’s faces in photographs to protect the women’s privacy. All women interviewed asked to keep their last names private.

Crime-Hit Washington Heights Community Holds Safety Meeting

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — With crime on a continued rise in the 34th Precinct, community leaders plan to meet with residents to discuss safety and introduce the precinct's new commanding officer.

Just last week, Inwood residents met with Deputy Inspector Barry Buzzetti, who replaced commanding officer Jose Navarro after he was demoted due to rising crime north of West 179th Street in Washington Heights and Inwood.

The more than 200 residents who attended the Aug. 24 meeting live in the Park Terrace section of Inwood, where a woman was allegedly raped by an off-duty cop days before the meeting.

During that meeting, Inwood residents called for their own precinct to be set up, citing rising crime in the area and limited resources to be dispatched in Inwood, which at its northernmost tip is 30 blocks from the station house.

Thursday’s meeting will give residents from the southern portion of the 34th Precinct a chance to voice concerns as well.

Hunt Is On for 'Chicken Mushrooms' and Other Edibles in Inwood Hill Park

MANHATTAN — “Wildman” Steve Brill, New York City’s beloved urban foraging expert, will return to Inwood Hill Park this August in search of exotic edibles from sassafrass root to chicken mushrooms.

Brill, who leads tours in parks throughout the city and across greater New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, said it’s a great time to forage for the poultry-like fungi, which are typically between 5 and 10 pounds and “taste just like chicken” with the right seasoning.

The group will meet on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 11:45 a.m. in a playground located at Dyckman Street and Broadway and continue for 4 hours through the hilly woods of Upper Manhattan.

Other expected finds include lamb’s-quarters (similar to spinach but “more tender, more flavorful and much more nutritious,” according to Brill), black birch twigs (for use in pain-relieving teas) and wood sorrel (which “tastes like lemonade” when brewed).

Foraging in city parks is officially forbidden, and the Central Park Conservancy's website has an article prominently displayed on its homepage entitled, "How Foraging Damages Park Landscapes."

Immigrants Taught English at Inwood Laundry

INWOOD — Don't wash your delicates with hot water and be careful conjugating that verb.

A group of Inwood residents is mixing its dirty washing with language by learning English while they do their laundry.

Artist Hector Canonge is offering a chance for more than 20 Spanish speakers to take free English classes at the Magic Touch Laundromat on Thayer Street, near Nagle Avenue.

"[The project] is based on what happens in laundromats with new immigrants," said Canonge, who will teach the sessions over four weeks.

"Many were having problems asking for change, or understanding the machines."

While he was doing his own laundry, Canonge, who lives in Inwood, said he saw people struggling with basic English and was inspired to help.

Magic Touch employee Rosa Alonzo, 28, said the classes — titled "The Inwood Laundromat Language Institute" — will also help immigrants working long hours.
