HARLEM BOOK FAIR AUTHORS TO DISCUSS RACE PERCEPTIONS ON C-SPAN'S BOOK TV

Harlem, NY (BlackNews.com) -- Coinciding with the surge of awareness around the killings of unarmed black men, Pamela Newkirk (pictured), author of Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga, and author Sherilynn Ifill (On the Courthouse Lawn: Confronting the Legacy of Lynching in the 21st Century), a regular political and election night commentator on both national and local television, will discuss America's history of race perception and its impact during the Harlem Book Fair on Saturday, July 18 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The discussion will be televised live on C-Span's BookTV.
During the height of BaltimoreÂ's recent unrest, a New York police officer placed what was considered a racist post on Facebook. The photo juxtaposed a picture of blacks on a minivan protesting the Michael Brown killing in Ferguson with one of baboons jumping all over a white woman's car.
As discussed in Ms. Newkirk's Spectacle, in 1904 a young Congolese man of petite stature was captured in Central Africa and brought to the United States. First, he was featured in an anthropology exhibit at the St. Louis WorldÂ's Fair. Two years later, the New York Zoological Garden displayed him in its Monkey House with an orangutan. The attraction became an international sensation, attracting thousands of New Yorkers and commanding headlines from across the nation and Europe. This discussion will trace AmericaÂ's history of race perception, and connect its impact and escalation from slave culture to prison culture to what some consider blatant disregard of life.

Officer Matt Kenny of the Madison Police Department will not face charges over the shooting of 19-year-old Tony Robinson, District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said today.
"I conclude that this tragic and unfortunate death was the result of a lawful use of deadly police force and that no charges should be brought against Officer Kenny in the death of Tony Robinson Jr.," Ozanne said.
"My decision will not bring Tony Robinson Jr. back," Ozanne told reporters. "My decision will not end the racial disparities that exist in the justice system, in our justice system. My decision is not based on emotion. Rather, this decision is based on the facts as they have been investigated and reported to me."
Robinson, an unarmed biracial man, was fatally shot by Kenny on March 6 in Madison, Wisconsin, setting off days of protests in the city. His death came amid lingering tensions over the killings by police elsewhere of other unarmed African-Americans that seized national attention.

Cuomo Cracks Down on Nail Salons With Emergency Order
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has decided to crack down on nail salons in the wake of a widely read New York Times story released last week that detailed a host of abuses against the largely undocumented community of immigrants that comprise the industry. Governor Cuomo issued an emergency order, effective immediately, assembling a multiagency task force that will inspect every single nail salon in New York to make sure it is complying with labor laws and its manicurists are not being exploited.
The new rules mandate that workers' rights must be clearly posted in all nail salons in six different languages, and that salons institute new safety measures to protect workers from contracting skin conditions or breathing in harsh chemicals. Manicurists will be required to wear both gloves and face masks. Salons will also be required to forge a contract with a bonding agency to ensure that if they go out of business, their workers will still be paid. Any salon that fails to comply will be shut down.
"We will not stand idly by as workers are deprived of their hard-earned wages and robbed of their most basic rights," Cuomo said.

Freddie Gray Severed His Own Spine Just Like Steve Biko Died of a 'Hunger Strike' By Lori Price, www.legitgov.org | 30 April 2015 | On Wednesday we read: A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray "banging against the walls" of the vehicle and believed that he "was intentionally trying to injure himself," according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post. (See: Prisoner in van said Freddie Gray was 'banging against the walls' during ride 29 April 2015.) Are we to actually believe that while in police custody, 25-year-old African American Freddie Gray severed his own spinal cord -- and crushed his own larynx, too? Recall a death decades earlier of South African anti-apartheid activist, Stephen Bantu Biko. The founder of the Black Consciousness Movement also died in police custody -- and the cause of his death was similarly reported as 'self-inflicted' -- due to an alleged hunger strike.

Fwd: Freddie Gray
It has been more than two weeks since Baltimore police killed Freddie Gray and no officer has been fired, arrested, or prosecuted. Local officials don't even have answers to the most basic questions: Why did police violently arrest Gray? Why was this healthy 25-year-old's voice box crushed, his spleen ruptured and 80% of his spine severed after 45 minutes with Baltimore law enforcement? 1
The lack of accountability for Gray's killing is unacceptable and the solution to Baltimore's policing crisis is not martial law or more militarized policing. Right now, we need widespread public pressure to ensure the necessary leadership and independent oversight to bring Gray's killers to justice and overhaul the Baltimore Police Department. Without independent oversight it's unlikely that Gray's killers will be held accountable. Local prosecutors work too closely with police on a day to day basis to hold them accountable — and they almost never do.2
Demand that Governor Hogan appoint Maryland's Attorney General to assist in the case.
To be Black in Baltimore means every day is a risk. In a city overcome with racism, police violence, and a police union blocking reform,3 even the most simple activities — a walk down the street or the drive to work — could mean an unlawful arrest or deadly attack at the hands of law enforcement. According to an investigation by the Baltimore Sun, in just 5 years, 100 Baltimore residents have won $5.7 million worth of settlements relating to police brutality and civil rights. The stories are shocking, yet almost none of the officers were held accountable:4
- Jerriel Lyles, who was attacked by police on his way out of a convenience store: "The blow was so heavy. My eyes swelled up. Blood was dripping down my nose and out my eye."
- Starr Brown, a pregnant woman slammed to the ground and kneed in the back by police after calling them for help: "They slammed me down on my face...The skin was gone on my face"
- An 87-year-old grandmother, who was attacked after calling an ambulance for her wounded son, was told: "B****, you ain't no better than any of the other old black b**** I have locked up."
Following Freddie Gray's killing, a community tired of living under siege and facing decades of employment discrimination and decimated public housing is rising up to demand change.5 Last night, as the National Guard moved into Baltimore, images of militarized police tear gassing and beating protestors, fires, and outrage once again flashed across our TV screens. The best way to restore peace to Baltimore is for Governor Hogan and local leadership to undo the structural racism targeting its people. But right now, police are preparing to announce even harsher measures to crack down on the protests — like a curfew for youth6 — that will likely continue to escalate an already unacceptable level of confrontation and violence between police and citizens.
Protestors in Baltimore are showing the same courageous resistance and vision for a better country that we see coming out of Ferguson, Madison, New York, Cleveland, Milwaukee, and other cities across the country. And just as in Ferguson, justice for the brutal police killing of Freddie Gray depends on Governor Hogan's leadership to do more than ramp up law enforcement.
